Show the Process: Why Letting Clients In Makes Your Work Stronger
Learn the value of showing your process and how to apply this to your business.
You’ve probably heard the old saying, “No one wants to see how the sausage is made.” For years, that was accepted wisdom in creative industries — keep the messy, complicated bits hidden and reveal only the polished result.
That thinking doesn’t hold up anymore.
In a world where AI can generate perfect visuals in seconds, the final product alone isn’t enough to stand out. What’s rare — and valuable — is the craft, thinking, and human touch behind the work. That’s what creates connection and trust.
Why Process Matters
Think about films like 1917, designed to look like one continuous shot, or Netflix series that pull off an entire episode with a single camera move. The visuals are stunning, but it’s knowing how they were made that makes them unforgettable. The process becomes part of the story — the hook people share.
In branding and design, it’s the same. When clients see the work take shape — the sketches, early concepts, refinements — they appreciate the final version more and feel invested in it.
From “Big Reveal” to Ongoing Collaboration
The old “Mad Men” model was to disappear for weeks and return with a grand reveal. No collaboration. No transparency. Just ta-da!
We prefer a different approach: sharing thinking early, showing the evolution, explaining why something works (or doesn’t), and even revealing the dead ends. It’s more open and a little vulnerable, but it means no surprises at the end — and a stronger relationship throughout.
A Recent Example: Inverstanley
When we worked with Invertstanley, a luxury homestead brand, to illustrate the McConnel Family crest, we wanted the client to experience more than just the finished artwork. We filmed a time-lapse of our sketches — from the first pencil strokes to the final refined illustration — and presented it alongside the completed crest.
That short video turned the design into a story. The family could see the care, skill, and decisions behind every detail, making the crest even more meaningful. They now have both a beautiful emblem and a memorable narrative to share.

Beyond Design
The value of showing your process applies in any industry:
- A chef walking diners through how a signature dish is prepared transforms a meal into an experience.
- A builder explaining material choices and sourcing builds confidence in the quality of their work.
- A financial adviser recording a short video explaining their recommendations adds depth and personal connection.
In every case, showing the “how” builds credibility, fosters trust, and gives people a story they can pass on.
How to Apply This
Showing your process doesn’t require elaborate production. Start with one or two simple actions:
- Document progress: Share mid-project photos or updates.
- Explain decisions: Outline the thinking behind a choice in a meeting or post.
- Use simple video: Capture a short time-lapse of part of your work.
- Invite involvement: Include clients in early reviews or brainstorming.
Small, consistent acts of transparency deepen engagement and make the outcome more valuable in your client’s eyes.
The Payoff
When you bring people into the process, two things happen:
- They understand the why behind the work.
- They become advocates for it, because they helped shape it.
And that’s the real win. A polished piece of design will get noticed. A polished piece of design with a story your client can tell? That gets remembered.
So, the next time someone says no one wants to see how the sausage is made, tell them this: in branding, showing the process isn’t risky — it’s your advantage.
The world loves an Underdog story, so do we.
Let’s work together and create our own.
